Enter The Poet - Ready To Apprehend The Year

Nostalgia

The common understanding of this word, is simply reminiscing about old times; good times.  However, it can also be considered living in the past, or dwelling on dark ideas; that the present will never be as good as it was. It is both and neither, and yet, it is an important tool to keep life in perspective.  Every new day carries with it a portion of days past, and a foreshadowing of days to come.

Still, Nostalgia by its nature is a very useful tool; it is a critique of both the good and the bad events which you have experienced. Without the insights of Nostalgia, I feel that our dreams of the future would fade, and that we would be stuck in a bleak and dreary present. Nostalgia provides us an opportunity to meditate on things which have come to pass, and look at them under the wisdom gained by time.

Traveling in this mental time machine, we have the opportunity to study the past, and then mold similar current incidents into better outcomes; or at least avoid repeating missteps of the past. In time, we can come to realize that past times were not always great, and that new is not always better; it is simply different.
